THE PLIGHT OF THE ORPHANS
In the midst of this pandemic (Covid-19), Governments, Politicians, Churches and Philanthropists are going round sharing food and other relief items to help vulnerable communities and individuals as many cities and urban centres as well as communities are under lock down. The situation is not different in Ghana as similar actions are been undertaken by the aforementioned groups.
One group has been cut off from this benevolent act as little or no action is taken to address their plight. Higher percentage of the aforementioned groups supporting the needy in the midst of this pandemic are concentrating on areas where the media (electronic and print) will cover their donations or philanthropic actions. As a result they go to hospitals, clinics, Municipal and District Assemblies, communities with the media to cover them. The most annoying part is their disregard for the observance of social distancing and other protocols aimed at fighting the virus. Another annoying part is the pasting of stickers/pictures on the donated items.
Hucasdevi Ghana visited some people and most importantly an orphanage to support them in this lock down period and it is sad to say that these donors or supporters have totally forgotten about these orphanages.
The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection under the laws of Ghana are mandated to steer the affairs of these orphanages and foster homes but are they really performing their duties. Some orphanages have more than 100 children under their care and here is the case that they’re also under lock down. What will they eat, drink, wear and even fight the pandemic without them being equipped with the requisite tools and material to fight the virus. 1000s of Veronica buckets, sanitisers, rubber pans, food items, relief and other PPEs have been donated by various groups but the orphans have been forgotten or left out.
Health workers as well as government together with other Philanthropists should go to the aid of these orphanages and attend to their needs. Just pay a visit to one or two orphanages and foster home and verify how difficult things are for them in this lock down moment. Join Hucasdevi Ghana to go to the aid of these orphans. Thank you.
